Integrity Employee Helps Local Organizations

May 2009

Patti Orzel is looking forward to sorting through bins and bins of used school supplies as the school year comes to an end. In connection with the Leadership McLean County program, Orzel and the other members of the task force, have brought the “Little…But Lots” program to Bloomington-Normal.

"Little…But Lots" is a community service project that collects used school supplies at the end of the school year and donates them to area agencies and organizations in need of those supplies. These school supplies will serve as items for arts and craft projects or be recycled and used as next year’s school supplies for children who need them. The purpose of this program is to involve children in helping other children and teaching them that ‘a little help from you can make a lot of difference to them’.

The "Little…But Lots" program was started in Morton, IL in 1994 by Nan Kirk, and the response there has been amazing. The supplies that have been collected have made their way to many local agencies and as well as schools hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and to the African Outreach Academy in Uganda, Africa.

At the close of this school year, children will be invited to donate any school supplies they choose, to this cause. This project is completely voluntary and supplies should only be donated with permission from the child’s parent or guardian. The program accepts all used (and new) supplies including: crayons, markers, pens, pencils, colored pencils, glue, paper, paints, rulers, book bags and other misc. supplies.

Designated collection boxes will be clearly labeled and set outside of the school office. Children can take the supplies they wish to donate to the boxes and they will be picked up at the end of the school year. Collection of the supplies will take place the last two weeks of school as the children are cleaning out their desks and lockers. This year bins have been set up at Grove Elementary, Prairieland Elementary and Northpoint Elementary schools.

This year’s recipients will be The Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal, Home Sweet Home Mission and the UNITY Community Center. Each organization provides services to area children and will benefit by receiving the school supplies.

Our hope is that the community will support this project, and that it will grow and expand to meet the needs of all area children and the organizations that provide services to them.
