Black Market for Stolen Data Escalating

Report: Data breaches stolen data, organized crime rampant
A new report from Verizon Business Security Solutions shows that there is an escalating worldwide black market for stolen data. The document, called the “2008 Data Breach Investigations Report” spans four years and some 500 forensics investigations involving 230 million records.

Some of the findings in the report include:

Most data breaches come from external sources. But breaches attributed to insiders were much large in scope than those caused by outsiders.
Most breaches resulted from a combination of events rather than a single action. And some form of error often directly or indirectly contributed to a compromise.

Security News
U.S. Authorities are investigating whether or not a laptop left unattended by Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez was breached by Chinese officials during a visit to the country last December. Since that time the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team has been called in to work on Commerce Department computers to determine the impact and actions needed.

As such, mandates for all government laptops have been issued that require disk encryption and the use of two-factor authentication for remote access. The incident is still under investigation.

Technology Over Time

The first computer ‘mouse’ was invented by Douglas Engelbart at the Stanford Research Institute in 1963 after extensive usability testing. The mouse won out over a head-mounted device that attached to the chin or nose, among other pointing devices. The first mouse used two gear-wheels perpendicular to one another.

Firewall: a system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network, frequently used in the prevention of unauthorized Internet users accessing private networks especially intranets.

Don’t be fooled though – a firewall is only a first line defense for your system. Modern day “hackers” are finding ways to move around your firewall (instead of breaking through it) such as sending e-mails or e-greetings to your unsuspecting employees that contain hidden code, allowing access. Firewalls should be merely the first part of your protect-detect-respond technology plan for your organization.
